God was certainly helping me out with the timing of this book. As we were reading "Earthquake in the Early Morning," we woke up on the morning of July 16th to news that an actual earthquake had occurred in Maryland at 5:27 in the morning and supposedly it could be felt in our hometown. I let Mikie watch a few snippets on the news, but we really were wishing that we would be able to feel an aftershock.
A few weeks later, we took our field trip to the Maryland Science Center where Mikie saw computer recordings of earthquakes in the last few minutes, days, weeks, and months.
An educator at the museum taught him about plate tectonics using a sliding puzzle.
He also saw a seismograph machine and made the needle move by jumping up and down, producing his own earthquake.

How ironic! Just glad it wasn't a full force earthquake. What neat hands on activities. Did little Zachary try to make his own earthquake also?
